Romero Jennings Celebrity and Fashion Makeup Artist

A die-hard fashion fiend, Jennings began drawing models and designing clothes when he was just seven years old to a soundtrack of glam rock. “Music is a big part of my life,” he concedes. “Grace Jones, Debbie Harry and David Bowie were unreal, virtual, creative, shape- shifting inspirations to me, and even today I still listen to their music and look to their images for inspiration.”

In the spirit of his chiseled icons, Jennings’ preferred look involves a perfected skin with a strobing face effect and an architectural eyebrow. Master that, and combine with regular use of Mineralize Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and he promises to unlock the secret of eternal youth.

Landing a full-page interview in the New York Times Magazine was a standout career moment, second only to being interviewed by Kim Kardashian, whom he describes as “a living doll.” Jennings took the New York Times feature as an opportunity to explain the more painterly approaches to makeup while admitting that it was also a good platform for showcasing his (exceptionally) long fingers.

Perhaps that comes in handy for putting his horticultural skills to good use. “Gardening inspires me to create, social media is my research and provides access to high-tech apps and learning opportunities, while music allows my mind to dream,” explains this polymath, who is showing us that it really is possible to have it all.

Stephen Dimmick – Celebrity Makeup Artist

Stephen grew up in a narrow minded Air Force coal mining town by the name of Ipswich in Queensland, Australia. He ran away from home at the age of 15 and moved to Brisbane to be with his fellow freaks. He took up hairdressing in the midst of a crazy night life. Being heavily influenced by the likes of Visage & Culture Club, makeup took a main role in his identity although it took several years before he actually realized that makeup could actually be a career.

After many years of traveling around the world Stephen took home in New York at the age of 28 in 1997. And it has been a long and slow rise to his current place in the world of makeup artistry working for the likes of Italian Vogue and Numero. He is heavily influenced by the likes of Richard Sharah, Maria Belt, Val Garland, Way Bandy, Regis Kevyn Aucoin and Heidi Morawetz.

Jessica Padilla – Vintage Makeup Artist

She is a proud member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 798 and has worked on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”, Keyed “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore”, worked on the team of Cirque De Soleil’s “Paramour” on Broadway, has done 12 feature films, 12 seasons of Fashion Week in NY and Paris and counts Sonic, Geico, Teen Vogue, Comedy Central, BBC America, and Funny or Die among her clients. Nick Barose

Barose began his formal makeup training by assisting Kevyn Aucoin.  Since then, he has risen to the top of his field.  He counts numerous Hollywood stars as his clients including Lupita Nyong’o (from her memorable Oscars season, her Vogue and Vanity Fair covers, as well as her Lancome campaigns) Jane Fonda, Rachel Weisz, Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander, Tracee Ellis Ross, Holly Hunter, Zoe Kravitz, Brit Marling, Tessa Thompson, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, among many others.

It is Barose’s refreshing beauty philosophy that appeals to a diverse group of Hollywood stars.  He is known for creating beautiful, flawless, and fresh looks with a slight twist on every skin tone. “I like to use make up to help bring out their personalities even more. My clients don’t really want drastic makeovers which erase the face and make everyone look the same. I love making each person look like themselves, but just a bit dreamier, more colorful, and more exciting” Barose currently splits his time between Los Angeles and New York City.

Val Garland

Through Alexander McQueen, Val met her idol, the photographer Nick Knight and in working with him perfected her trademark ‘flawless make-up’. Val explains: “Nick works on a large format camera, 10×8, so you see everything, every speck of powder. It teaches you to work with the ultimate precision”. Val’s obsession with detail manifests itself in what has become her ultimate make-up accessory – a magnifying glass which she uses to check that the make up will stand up to the camera’s scrutiny. She is know for the beautiful quality of the models’ skin and will regularly spend half an hour making a girl’s complexion come alive for a picture, massaging it with creams and lotions. She loves skin food and is an authority on products that make the skin look beautiful. Her advice on all matters that relate to beauty and make-up is frequently sought and then quoted by beauty editors on magazines across the globe.

Val’s other trademark is her use of brushes – many make-up artists apply cosmetics with their fingers but Val prefers the accuracy and hygiene of brushes. She is also sensitive to the feelings of the models and celebrities she works with including

Gwyneth Paltrow, Kylie, Gwen Stefani, Kate Winslet and Jennifer Lopez: “a stranger’s hands on your face can be intrusive,” she comments. Her legendary brush collection includes the ultimate gadget – a special powder brush that she uses for foundation – a widely copied technique that Val pioneered. It helped her achieve the hugely influential ‘sexy/sweaty’ look on Gisele and Rhea Durham for a Christian Dior campaign shot by Nick Knight.

On a shoot the colour and silhouette of the clothes inspire Val, but also who the woman is that she is helping to portray. Her ability to create subtle characters and build personalities using cosmetics means that Val is the make-up artist of choice for photographers including Mario Testino, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, Richard Burbridge, Solve Sundsbo and Steven Klein. She regularly contributes to magazines including W, British, Italian, Japanese and US Vogues, Bazaar, Dazed & Confused, Numero and Another. Her show roster includes Alexander McQueen, Martine Sitbon, Lavin, Chloe, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and Ungaro. Advertising clients include Dior, Anna Molinari, Bulgari, Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan, Lancome, Rimmel, Just Cavalli, Gucci and MAC. Val lives in London but spends more time on airplanes than at home and enjoys painting, reading, boxing, fishing and gardening – when she finds the time.

Michelle Coursey
